E36 Power Steering Leak Mod Day -- APRIL 22 @ A&L
Do you have an E36? You probably have a leaking power steering hose or two. Welcome to the club. Replacement hose from BMW costs over $200. Brad told me about a guy on bimmerforums selling a retrofit kit for $25. Check it out Here.
I emailed the guy, and if we buy multiple kits from him we will save on shipping. Not huge savings, but we can get them for $21 apiece. Anthony is willing to open his shop on a weekend to have a mod day. Estimated install cost for Anthony's shop labor is around $30... we haven't really figured out how long this will take per car yet. We still have to work out minor details like the date but gauging interest here. So roughly $50 a person to have this fixed for good, and you don't even have to get your hands dirty. Just hang out and BS with the rest of the crowd. Hell, maybe there'll be pizza.Who's interested? I am willing to place the order for the kits, delivered straight to Anthony's shop. List what car you have, it's needed to place an order. 1. McK '93 325 2. Miljan3 '95 M3 (parts only) 3. EnzoXYZ '98 M3 4. Shuasha '97 M3 5. Arnel (Install only) 6. Black Box (Install only) 7. $50 sounds good enough to prevent such a problem. Put me down (98M3).

I am interested in the install only, as I already purchased the hoses from GQ Style back in January. Good quality, and prompt shipping.
Install looks to be a breeze, but for ~30, it's worth it alone not to have a big mess of PS fluid in your eyes, clothes and garage floor. May be a good idea to advise people to bring their own PS fluid if you are going with something other than standard ATF...I planned to refill with Royal Purple. |

I might have to change out my power steering hoses on the 7. In the next coming weeks, I'll have to check to see what condition they're in.
I changed them on my last 7 and I believe I paid $50 in parts and it took me about 1 hour to do the actual change (with multiple breaks).

I read the directions a couple months ago, and the 10-20+ pg thread last fall, so I don't recall. I'll dig up the box when I get home and reread.
Initially, I want to say a full refill is not required, as probably only fluid in the resivoir will be drained, not the pump/rack. However, while you are there, it may be a good idea to flush by filling and turning lock to lock and draining a couple times. Many have commented an improved steering feel by doing this. I don't believe in BMW's "lifetime fluid" recommendation. |
