Which one is better? I know that Mobil 1 is a much more branded oil, but how is AMSOil for our BMWs?
They use AMSOil in Ferraris and Lambos at most dealerships and was wondering that with that taken into consideration, would it be better for our cars?

On all the Government projects I worked on if there was an engine oil to be used it was always spec'd out as Mobil 1.
For myself, I would use the one that I could get easiest as both should be fine.

AMSOil is about $5.70/quart while Mobil 1 goes for about a dollar less. I'm trying to become a AMSOil wholesale customer right now since I would rather use AMSOil over Mobil 1.
If I get into the wholesale buyer program, I'll sell those on here at my price + actual shipping costs. That way at least this board can help out some of the members with oil at the dealer price. As some have noticed, I'm not looking into making money from this website like other websites out there. I don't want to recommended something that I wouldn't use myself. With that said, I just want to let you guys know that this forum and website is just 'for the fun of it' and for the 'fun of being an car enthusiast' (notice I said 'car' and not just 'BMW'). Well, I'm waiting on my application from AMSOil.

I've read countless oil debate threads since I started lurking on car forums/newsgroups/lists years ago. Everyone's got a different opinion.
My take: With regards to a modern engine (particularly a BMW engine), it pretty much DOESN'T matter what brand you buy so long as you CHANGE it reguarly enough. That and treat your engine half way decently. There are lots of reasons to go synthetic, not the least of which is that's what BMW says you should put in your car. The Walmart down the road has Mobil One for 4 bucks and change a quart and that's what I use. I used to drive 5K on synth before a change, nowadays I've switched to a new system: change the filter every 3.5K and the oil every 7K. Modern syntheic is good for much longer intervals than dino-juice, but filter technology hasn't changed much. -Neg |

Personally I use Mobil 1 15w-50 in both of my cars. I've reved the engine on my Jetta to over 7,500rpm(redline is 6600 but there is no rev limiter) with the oil because with free-reving engines like the 16v 2.0 longblock, this oil really frees them. If I where to use something else, I would use Redline.
I already use Redline everywhere else in the car. But at $8 a qt, bi-month oil changes can be very expensive and I'd rather use that money for something else than get a few more thousand miles out of my engine.

I contacted Mobil1 and asked them about their testing. They replied by saying that they put Mobil1 in a 325 BMW and had it in theri for 1 million miles. Of course they replaced their oil filter (don't know how often). For AMSOIL, they also tested their oil for 1 yr. ( I think). Anyway, I read some lab test results (can't really remember the specifics) but Mobil1 outperforms AMSOIL by a slight margin.

I agree with NegCamber. Oil technology has changed, but the filter is still the same. I keep it safe and change my oil and filter at the same time between 3k to 3.5K. I think it is waste of money to use synthetic oil when you change your oil & filter regularly. Synthetic is good when you don't change your oil for a longer period of time.
