Cool 1997 McLaren F1 Sells for Record Amount

my favorite car, amazing price ... wonder how much the McLaren F1 GTR or the LM would have sold at this auction

Quote:
RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby's, entered the history books again tonight selling a superb McLaren F1 supercar for £2,530,000 at the highly anticipated Automobiles of London event.

Marking the first time the car has been offered since sold new by McLaren, tonight's sale of one of the world's fastest road cars and McLaren's former Park Lane showroom model attracted spirited bidding. The final sales price more than doubled the pre-sale estimate.

"The world record breaking price for the McLaren F1 is a huge achievement for our London auction and confirms RM's position as the world's leading auction house for vintage automobiles," said Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Auctions European Division.

"The £2.5 million sale price redefined the market for these superb vehicles. The McLaren F1 is quite simply one of the most contemporary cars ever produced and tops a sale that has again shown that great cars attract great prices. We are now looking forward to building on tonight's results at our next European event in Maranello, Italy on May 17, 2009," he added.

as much as I love the Veyron, I would have to say that I would still take the McLaren F1

man I would not even consider a veyron over this....actually when it comes to modern supercars the only thing I MIGHT consider over it is an F40 LM because I simply love them so much, but it would be a tough tough pick (I guess if I could afford either I would buy both).

good call man, F40 is one of the cars that would make me think twice about getting a McLaren F1 if i ever had the money.

Come on guys. @ $5,000,000USD, you could buy the Veyron AND the F40. I stand by my original statement

What year did the Veyron or the F40 win Lemans? Forget it. McLaren F1 = Best car EVER built. The Veyron is a fast ugly luxury car, nothing more.

I am curious what's so special about this F1. If I were ready to drop several million on car car like this, low mileage would be a turn off. I've seen a few for sale recently for much less money.

Todays interview with Lewis states, he has to win 3 world championships. I had not heard that before. Looks like he has a very healthy challenge for that car...

And there remains a huge incentive to add more world championship tallies to his roster. Last season he had a bet with McLaren boss Ron Dennis that if he won three world title, Hamilton would be given a McLaren F1 LM road car.

"I want to get this (McLaren F1) car, so I will definitely work as hard as I can to get to number three at some stage," smiled Hamilton.

I read also that McLaren had to win the constructors title too, which they did not. No F1 for Hammy.

I think the bugg would be a better road car, more creature comforts, not as hard, and sharp as the maclearen either.

I'd take a buggatti over the maclaren because of those reasons, but for a track car there really isn't a substitute...

its a cool car but something about that front end has always struck me as "odd". It looks like it's been punched in the face and the its smooshed in the front. The front windsheild curves up to high i think. also, isn't the driver seat in the middle? Was never a huge fan of that either...cool car none the less i guess.
