Looking for a competent welder in the area, who speaks english.
I'm looking for a welder in the area who knows what he is doing, and speaks fluent English.
I realize this sounds ignorant, but I'm tired of going to shops and having to reiterate what I want a million times to blank stares. Or worse, to over acknowledgment, only to have the work come out not to the desired specifications. What I need done: Chop off the top threaded sections of my E30's front shock tubes. Then precisely measure, and cut to size, threaded sections of VW shock tubes. Weld VW sections onto the top of the E30 shock tubes, at the precise measurement needed for the shock collar nuts to tightly screw the shock inserts into the tubes. If anyone knows where I can get this done in the area the guidance would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'll have the shock tubes removed and dissembled, so only fabrication skills are needed.

Ive done it a few times. No idea why you wanna use VW tops though lol. PM me what youre REALLY trying to do and we'll go from there.
PS its easier for you in the long run to tell me what you are trying to do instead of what you think you want to do. ![]() |

Basically, I'm running the ground control weld in coilover conversions, with shortened shock tubes and G60 Bilstein Sport shock inserts - because they're about 4in or so shorter then stock E30 shocks.
I'll try to explain this as easy as possible, because I know it gets confusing: G60 Shock collar nuts have inner threads. E30 Collar nuts have outer threads. Measure and cut off inner threaded section of E30 shock tubes. Weld on outer threaded section of VW (G60) shock tubes in place of E30 threaded section. G60 shock inserts go into Modified E30 shock tubes. G60 collar nut screws into newly welded on VW threaded section of E30 shock tubes and tightly holds shock inserts in place. Make sense?

Why not do it how GC tells you to? ie. cutting off the stock perch, weld on the GC perch plate and use the spacer tube in the bottom of the stock E30 housing??

I did cut off the stock perch and weld on the GC perch. However the GC's max out at 2.25" and that's not low enough.
In order to go lower you need to lower the perch. When you do that you need to chop the tube. When you do that you need shorter shocks. Also, update: I just found out Bilstein might actually make E30 collar nuts for G60 shocks. Waiting to hear back from them. That would save me a lot of trouble.
