PRESS RELEASE

THE BMW X1 CONFIRMED FOR UNITED STATES IN 2011

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey – July 1, 2009 ... It was confirmed today that the BMW X1 is planned to debut in the United States in calendar year 2011. The X1 has been conceived with the flexibility to offer traditional rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations, as well as a wide variety of gasoline and diesel powertrain choices. In light of rapidly evolving US market demands, fuel prices, and regulatory standards, elements of the X1's US launch plan, including engine and drivetrain configurations, will be forthcoming closer to the time of launch.

The BMW X1 will debut in Europe this fall with a choice of four engines - one gasoline and three diesels - and will be available in rear-wheel drive and xDrive all-wheel drive configurations. The X1 will set new benchmarks in the premium compact segment for efficiency, comfort, utility, and of course driving dynamics. Achieving up to 5.2 L/100km (45.2 miles per US gallon) on the European test cycle, the BMW Advanced Diesel-powered X1 sDrive18d will provide remarkable fuel efficiency while still achieving a top speed of 200km/h (124mph). Each drivetrain choice for the X1 will showcase the latest results of BMW's EfficientDynamics engineering strategy, which is focused to reduce emissions and consumption while enhancing the performance expected of any BMW.

I just don't get it. X1, X3, X5? I understand they're going after different price points, but I would rather they just add different badges onto the X3 and X5 for that. I can't imagine something being smaller than a X3.

That's what I thought too. Is there really a market for something smaller than an X3? Maybe the next X3 will be larger?

+1

I can almost guarantee this X1 will be either the same size or bigger than the current X3

I dunno, I think they are trying to capture those that would want a 3er hatchback, but giving a more SUVish appeal without being a full blown SUV (a la escalade).

Given those shots, not bad. I'd like to check it out, even though I doubt you'd see the tt 6 much less a V8 in there.... That's the one downfall.

Kinda looks like an X3 to me. Oh well....we all b*tched about the X3 when it came out and after a few years it became decent. Maybe this one won't be so bad. Seems okay from the pix and what not but without detailed specs (I'm curious about cargo loading, curb weight, and engine options)..... I wonder if there will be a shift in price point for the X3 and X5 or if this is to make up for the increased cost of them (considering the 1-series is now the price point of the pre-328 era E90's).

The X5 will get bigger....more into the Q7 and GL 3 row territory.....that will pull the X3 into current X5 territory and create a nice little niche for this X1......sized about what the EX35, RDX, Tiguan, Q5, etc.......

my sister just got an X3 and its tiny. I can not imagine what the X1 will be like. The X3 already feels like a little toy! ALthough I did love the handling, braking and all around feel of the X3 when I drove it yesterday.
