Audi Club Event at ABCC:

I had a BLAST at the event this weekend! (Passed on the full track due to work schedule.)

The Audi guys know how to put on a good show and everybody at the track was very friendly.

It was good to meet the folks I was able to meet. I would have been out and meeting more people except I spent all of my free time on Saturday chasing after a strange clunking noise coming from my car. It turns out my exhaust was hitting the diff brace so it was nothing serious but we came in after our out lap for two of the four sessions on Saturday as we were worried it was something else and it's always better to be safe than sorry!

BTW, the AST 5100's rocked in both dry and wet conditions. I wasn't doing anywhere near 10/10th's due to the strange clunking noise but I'm looking forward to finding the limits and tuning the suspension. Mark White, a pro racer who was visiting and doing some classroom sessions kindly drove my car around for a few laps in the wet on Sunday, and he commented that the car handled very well considering the wet conditions. I was amazed at how fast he could find the dry line and instantly get up to speed. I spent most of my last session on Sunday practicing my drifting. My official excuse is my stock open diff and the rain was coming down hard. Mark White was a down-to-earth, stand up guy. He is currently racing in the Koni Challenge ST class in a bright green Mazda Miata, #147.

I'll definitely be signing up for the June BHF event barring any potential scheduling conflicts. If any of you are regulars at Windy City BMW Auto-X events, I'll see you at those events. I will be there in an Avus/Black M3 #999.

I especially loved the last session. They combined groups 5 and 6, so it created new challenge driving with different drivers on track as well as 35 minute long session. I'm really surprised my brakes held up throughout that one, although did smell pretty bad haha.

At the end of the day, instructor actually gave me permission to run solo and told me I should sign up for intermediate group next time, woot woot! This really surprised me as I wasn't expecting that at all, especially since it's my first time out. I guess autox does help

All in all, I had SHITTON of fun this weekend and can't wait to get back on track, hopefully with matching wheels/tires this time

I don't have any personal experience with the 4100's but its reputation with the BMW crowd is very good so far. If you ever want to go to double (or even triple) adjustables down the road, the 5100's may be for you, as they are upgradeable. However, the upgrade is in the form of adding remote reservoirs so if you ever plan on going racing, some organizations don't allow that. The price of entry is also steeper, at a few hundred $$$'s higher than the 4100's.

In fact, I wasn't thinking and got the 5100's for my race car and SCCA Improved Touring doesn't allow remote reservoir shocks so I will probably end up moving the 5100's to my DD and getting some 4200's for my race car down the road.

The guys at Vorshlag (the US distributor for AST) are awesome and they know their stuff. Tell 'em Nobu sent you and they will take care of you.
