What tire size for 17x7.5 wheel?

I want to get front tires for my E36 M3 and was wondering what size tires to get. From the factory the front 17x7.5s are fitted with 225/45s and I was wondering if it would be okay to fit 235/40s. Tirerack does say that 235/40s on 17s should be fitted on 8-9.5 wide wheels, but do you guys think it will be okay for 7.5s?

Thanks in advance

235 will be fine. Slight bulge though. 225 will look great on a 7.5 Have you checked to see the true section width? Some "235" tires really are more like a "225" from other manufacturers...

I currently have 225/40 and they do look great but I would like some more grip upfront.

Tirerack says the section width is 9.5

Tire Specs for Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

Will I be fine, or should I just do 225/45?

I've got Yoko Advans on my 7.5's and they look perfect. No bulge. Section width is 9.6
I say go for it. You'll be fine IMO.
Tire Specs for Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD07

edit - just noticed there's a big difference in the tire's tread width which will affect how it looks, but I still say you'll fit fine.

i would suggest staying with 225s, but getting the stickiest compound you can live with/afford. that will take you further than and extra 10 mm of width.

+1. The 235 should work fine but it's not really going to buy you much in terms of contact patch.

Any reason? If you're looking for more grip look into better tires. The Neovas that were linked are very good. So are Dunlop Z1s, Bridgestone RE-01R, Falken RT-615, Kumho XS, and Michelin PS2.

I hope you plan to match the brand of tires in the rear.

235/40-17 is the stock size on '95 M3's with thier 7.5" rim.

+1, I have Eagle F1's on the R right now, and they are a good tire, they give good dry grip, very good wet grip, but they are pretty expensive, and they have soft side walls. I need a new set of tires soon, and i'm going to be switching to the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star spec's.
