How wide can I go?

I'm looking at 19" rims for my 2004 S4. It currently has 18x8.5, but I was wondering if I can go with the size that's on the RS4 19x9. It looks like there is room, but does anyone have any positive/negative experiences?

My summer wheels were/are 19x8.5 ET32 with a 235/35/19 tire.
Pretty much perfect fitment for a B6/B7.
Not sure how much you want to spend but they are now for sale in the classified.

The Rs4 runs a 19x9 with a ET29.
You will not be able to run that offset and width without some poke past the fenders.
Not a good look.

people do this on AWD cars? i thought this would fuck them up? pretty sure my manual sez all wheels need to be equal and it wouldn't even like differing tires?

I doubt that they are that wide. I don't think that even racecars have rims that wide. They definitely are not OEM Audi anything.

I assumed he was referring to the ride height, not the wheel width.

As long as the overall wheel diameters with tires are within 5% you are just fine running a staggard setup.

I'm running a 19x8.5 with a 215/35/19 in the front and 19x9.5 with a 235/25/19 in the rear. The only thing is that the fronts might be a tad tight, the rear you should have no problems whatsoever to fit em on.
