Shipping wheels...

What's the best/cheapest way to safely ship wheels?

With tires? Go with FedEx and it should be under $100 to ship all 4

Would it be more cost effective to leave tires on and wrap the wheels, covering the faces, or take off the tires to save on weight and use boxes?

Cost effective? No
Time effective? Yes

The weight of the tire is probably ~20 lbs and they charge the shipment by weight. Just go to fedex.com and price it out with or without tires. Take a scale to see how much it weighs with the tire and figure about 25lbs for just the wheel. It'll actually be a little under 25 but thats a safe assumption.

Fedex Ground. I've shipped a ton of wheels and always have the best of luck with them. Ship them separately in individual boxes without tires. Bubble and foam wrap the edges of each rim, or don't be surprised by lip bends.

The Palatine UPS is great for shipping wheels. Take them in there and theyll give you a TON of paper/filling in your boxes. I go there all the time

wheels are less likely to get damaged with the tires on them and doing the tirerack circle disc style...

packaging wheels in a box means you gotta leave like 2" of good padding from the edge of the wheels to each edge of the box if you want to be sure you don't get shipping damage.

Even mighty TireRack has had to resend me wheels without tires mounted due to being bent/damaged in transit so I'd suggest you either overpackage the heck out of them OR leave the tires on!

As a buyer, I always prefer to get them WITH old tires (I'd rather dismount the tires and know the wheels are okay and survived the shipping apes!)

i actually shipped some a couple of weeks ago.

i taped them good and brought it into both ups and fedex kinkos to get priced. the guys behind the counters told me about $32-34/wheel. i took those suckers right back out the door.

i priced them out online and it quoted me an estimate of about $19/wheel w/ tire. i figure i would take a gamble since everyone on the net said it shouldn't be more than $25...so i printed my own labels, slapped them on and dropped them at the fedex/kinkos.

they ended up charging about $22/wheel on my credit card.

UPS in general is pretty good at shipping tires.
