Sandblasting Rims

I want to sandblast my 1 or 2 of my DS1 rims that I have painted black. 1 of them is rusting from the brakes and the other 1 has some curb rash on it so I want to redo them and dont want to sand them by hand. Anybody know someone or a place that could do this for me?

I may be wrong here but I believe that sandblasting aluminum is frowned upon.

IMO - If someone does not know the answer, then the only stupid questions are the ones not asked.

The best way to refinish an aluminum wheel would be a chemical stripper, it makes life alot easier in the long run. Sandblasting will leave a ton of pits and a textured surface, while a chemical stripper would give it a smoother finish, which would make it easier to repaint/repowdercoat

Agreed, especially since wheels tend to have very hard paint/powder. it takes a pretty aggressive bead to push through it in a timely fashion. You can in fact blast aluminum, but like Greg said it will usually leave pitting. I've blasted plenty of wheels myself but used a semi aggressive bead and spent a solid 45 minutes on each wheel in a closed cabinet. Most blasters use junk and dirty beads(sand is illegal) and do it outside....which is good for like blasting car frames IMO. I vote chemical removal as well.

blasting

i own a powder coating shop an i do wheels all the time, blasting can be a big no no in certain situations. I dont want to speak for all shops but i know some us huge industrial pressure blasters with half inch nozzels to blast the finish off. Its fast and economical and cheaper for you, but it can easily damange a alu. rim. Quick story, I got a call from a lamborghini dealership awhile back and they wanted me to come check out a set of murci. rims they had just got back a big and famous shop. So i roll up in, theres 3 suits with pissed off looks on the face staring at these wheels and there like what do you think. I straight up tell them that these wheels are f@%&ed its the worst job i ever seen and i cant believe they sent them to you like that. They were gloss black with crazy orange peel they blasted the shit out of it and literally took off chunks of the rims face, they even coated over the old wheel weights. They asked me i can fix the gouges and re-coat it nicley, so back to the subject, preping expensive delicate rims need to be handeled with extreme care, you dont want to blast the shit out of them especially the oem finishes. So what i do is first is use eco, and alloy friendly chemicals to remove the original coat either dipping the wheels or i using a scrapper and wire brush and do it by hand. Then i put it in the blaster using low pressure and fine grit to clean off the wheel and get a little textue for better adhesion.
